The grand Carlton Hotel was designed by Carl August Darmer for Anton Huth, the man who owned the massive Pacific Brewery. The hotel opened in 1909 in anticipation of the construction of Union Station. It is an interesting mix of construction techniques and technologies, with the frame and floors made of reinforced concrete, the main supports of heavy timber, and the walls of brick, stone, and hard plaster between the projecting bays. The hotel was rehabilitated in the late 1970s, and the once-lavish interior has been replaced with offices.
