Davies Building, John Campbell & Company
1926 Pacific Avenue
Your eye will see this grouping of buildings as a unit, even though they were built at different times over a five-year period beginning in 1890. At 1926 Pacific Avenue is the Davies Building; at 1930 Pacific is the Reese, Crandall & Redman Company; and at 1932 and 1936 Pacific are McDonald and Smith and Bradley, and Morely & Company.
From the sidewalk to the parapets, this wonderful rhythmic assemblage of arched windows, fine brickwork, and cast iron helps define Pacific Avenue’s most characteristic “railroad block.” The buildings appropriately house artists and antiques on the upper floors The ground-level storefronts seem to be largely for the delight of pedestrians.
