Garretson, Woodruff, and Pratt Company
1754 Pacific Avenue
This proud Romanesque brick structure, designed by Frederick A. Saxton, was built in 1891 as a warehouse for a thriving dry goods wholesaler named Garretson Woodruff. The size and quality of the building is a testimony to the optimism and rapid growth of commerce at the terminus of the Northern Pacific Railroad. Less than five years after the building was finished, the company collapsed in the depression of the mid-1890s. People’s Department Store started in this building. The ornate terra cotta detailing is some of the best in the district.
