The Seaside shingle mill, beginning in 1905, stood on and near the present-day Navy athletic field. In 1919, David Clough, a former governor of Minnesota, purchased the Seaside mill and gave it to his two grandsons, Edward and David Hartley, in appreciation for their military service during World War I. Edward and David were the sons of Roland Hartley. The name of the mill was changed to Bayside Shingle. Edward was also a graduate of Yale University. Most likely, operating the former Seaside Shingle Mill would be Edward and David’s first opportunity to use their business skills.

The Bayside Shingle Mill property was later incorporated into the adjacent Robinson Manufacturing facility.
