Tacoma was a pioneer in public power, creating the Public Utility District in 1893. The Snoqualmie falls Power Company contracted with the City until the first major dam was built on the Snoqualmie River in 1912. In 1902, the Snoqualmie Falls Power Company constructed this one-story brick transformer house to reduce the voltage arriving in the city from the hydroelectric plant development at Snoqualmie Falls. The plant distributed most of the power in the city. In 1915, nine transformers operated in the building. This transformer house continued in service until 1958, when it was converted into a warehouse with no original equipment remaining.
