This quintessential warehouse district building has fine architectural features and a near perfect sense of proportion. Because the Northern Pacific owned most of the land and could enforce design guidelines on builders as a condition of sale, the district developed a strongly unified character and design. Nowhere are the early design ambitions and expectations more visible than the West Coast Grocery Building. It was finished in 1893 and handled tons of food stuff on its way to the Klondike Gold Rush at the turn of the century. West Coast was still shipping groceries from the building in the 1970s. One of the trademark brand names for the grocery company was “AMOCAT.” Get it?
